At Aurora Foxes, a specialist college and training hotel for young adults with learning disabilities, the spirit of FutureChef is making a unique and lasting impact. In partnership with the Springboard Charity, the Aurora Foxes Academy FutureChef Competition isn’t just about who can cook the best dish, it’s about empowerment, inclusion, and nurturing the skills that support independence and lifelong success.

Aurora Foxes hosted its very own FutureChef competition tailored specifically to SEND learners. Over 80 students from across the college’s residential houses participated in preliminary heats, culminating in an exciting final at Taunton and Bridgwater College on February 13th. The competition challenged students to plan menus, work within a set budget, and execute their dishes to professional standards. The top 12 finalists rose to the occasion, impressing a panel of judges that included hospitality professionals from Sodexo and the Foxes Hotel team.

But beyond the kitchen, this event served as a transformative learning experience.

Students developed a wide range of vital life and workplace skills such as menu planning, cost control, time management, hygiene, and safe kitchen practices—all while building confidence and learning how to collaborate effectively. For many, it was a chance to step out of their comfort zones and into a professional environment, using real-world equipment and working under timed conditions. Judges were particularly impressed by the students’ precision, creativity, and ability to adapt.

Michael Taylor, Learning and Development Manager at Sodexo and a long-time Springboard Ambassador, played a pivotal role in making this initiative a reality. His unwavering commitment to inclusive hospitality education has opened doors for many young people with learning difficulties, supporting them into meaningful employment. Michael’s work was recognised nationally when he was awarded Springboard Ambassador of the Year in 2023.

For the winning student, the rewards extended beyond certificates and recipe books, they were invited to attend the National Final of FutureChef as a VIP guest, experiencing the competition on a national stage alongside their parents. It was not just a moment of pride, but a powerful testament to how FutureChef can change lives.

The Aurora Foxes FutureChef initiative showcases what’s possible when industry and education work together to support SEND learners. Through creativity, mentorship, and real-world opportunities, students are gaining the confidence and skills to pursue careers in hospitality, and redefining what success looks like, one dish at a time.
